Contractions explained in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contraction_%28childbirth%29

Generally it is the tightening (contracting) of the uterus where the baby is staying now. When it contracts, baby has less space to move about, this caused the tummy to become hard. According to Mummy's friend, it is normal to have contractions. As long as it does not cause any pain, it will be alright. If it does, this will mean going into labor.

This is commonly known as "Braxton Hicks" contractions. You can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braxton_Hicks.
